Evil Is As Evil Does

Former Republican Presidential candidate -- now MSNBC political analyst -- Pat Buchanan, frequently reminds us that although Bush and Cheney are often morally and literally wrong, the Democrats are not an effective opposition party because they "lack the courage of their convictions."

We fear that a lack of courage may be only a small piece of the major puzzler of the day:

  • WHY don't the Democrats stand up to Bush?
  • WHY don't they fulfill their sworn duty to defend the Constitution?
  • WHY don't they make even the slightest effort to fulfill their promise that -- if elected -- they would change course in Iraq and make Bush and Cheney accountable to the American people?
Since the 2006 elections, we have stood by helplessly while "leaders" in Congress continue to make noise and do little else to stop the runaway train wreck that is the Bush Administration's foreign and domestic policy.

The problem is, we are all ON that train and are headed for disaster! We can only watch helplessly as:
The economy plunges;
Jobs are lost;
Gasoline prices soar;
Toys are poisoned;
Illegal wars are waged and more are threatened;
The environment is polluted and the Earth is plundered;
Big business and billionaires get richer;
The poor get poorer;
Access to health care is lost to more and more Americans...
Both political parties have attracted candidates, who, once elected, use their position of influence to amass personal power unto themselves. They are selfish and egotistical with narrow-minded ambition and little -- if any -- regard for their sworn duty to their constituents. Sure there are exceptions, but those who do try to express outrage and act in opposition to anti-democratic policies (ala Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul) are ignored and/or ridiculed by the mainstream media and their colleagues in Congress.

What is really going on? Unfortunately, we get the sinking feeling we know:

Both major political parties are intrinsically evil.

Both are pawns of the military industrial complex, big oil and big business.

But at least the Republican Party admits their true agenda. A voter who elects a Republican (unless they do not read or watch anything except Faux news) should have a pretty good idea of what they are getting.

As for the Democrats, they pretend to stand for ONE thing and then DO something altogether different!

So, which is worse? Someone who "supports evil, but insists they believe it is good? Or someone who supports evil while claiming, at least some of the time, they actually KNOW it is evil?"
"This is where we've come: two criminal gangs run the United States from Washington. Neither of them understands the supreme and sacred value of an individual human life. Neither understands any matter of principle relating to liberty or peace. Both of them are intent upon power, no matter how many innocent people must die, and regardless of how many countries must be destroyed, including our own."
Polls show that, over time, more and more Americans favor impeachment proceedings against Dick Cheney and George W. Bush.

Hopefully, with the help of the Internet, people are beginning to wake up to the truth. This country no longer needs a good housecleaning -- it needs to be demolished and rebuilt with better rodent and roach-resistant materials.

Please call or write to your member of Congress and tell them you support Kucinch's impeachment resolution and want them to do the same. Otherwise, next time they are up for reelection you will remember that they put their own needs for power over the needs of their country.

Still at the ENDA the Line

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), albeit without protections for Transgendered employees.

Although we are deeply disappointed that the approved version of the bill does not include our Transgendered sisters and brothers, we recognize that yesterday's vote was historic.

For more than 20 years, advocates for workplace protections for LGBTQ people have been working tirelessly for this legislation. We often wondered whether we would live to see the day that a majority in either House of Congress would vote to support our right NOT to get fired simply for loving someone.

As the song says, The Times, They Are A-Changing... yet, lest we forget, we are just one-third of the way to the finish line.

Keep in mind that the Senate has yet to vote on ENDA because we are still waiting for Senator Ted Kennedy to introduced it!

And even if the Senate does pass an ENDA bill while Bush is still in office, he has promised a veto.

Still, with all of the hurdles that remain, we feel it is important to recognize this moment as a reflection of how far we've come and how much further we must travel before we become full and complete American Citizens.

Please take a moment to watch this short clip of Representative Barney Frank's emotional plea for his colleagues to vote in favor of ENDA:

We hope you will call Barney Frank and thank him for NOT abandoning the LGBT Community -- even though he has many of the legal rights and protection that remain unavailable to the rest of us.

Representative Frank can be reached at (202) 225-5931 or emailed via a web form on his website.

ON STRIKE!

We are on strike today to show our opposition to the Bush Administration and the weak and ineffective Democratic "opposition" to his illegal and un-American policies.

If you do nothing else today, call Senators Schumer (202-224-6542) and Feinstein (202-224-3841) and your own representatives in Congress.

Tell them you oppose Judge Mukasey (who refuses to say whether water boarding is torture and declared the President is above the law) for Attorney General.

Demand that they vote YES on Dennis Kucinich's resolution to initiate impeachment proceedings against Dick Cheney (H.R. 333) TODAY!

Please fellow citizens - We have GOT to start somewhere:

"The stream of commuters heading into the city, the caravan of tractor-trailers pulling out of the rest stop into the dawn’s early light, speak a deep-throated YES to the sum of what’s going on in our collective life."

Pakistan: A Sneak Peek at Our Fascist Future

President and head of the Pakistani military, General Pervez Musharraf, has declared Marshall law in Pakistan -- suspending elections, shutting down the media, arresting peace activists and members of the judiciary (who were about to declare that the recent re-election of Musharraf was unconstitutional).

It appears that that the hypocrite-in-chief, George Bush, has sided with Musharraf in the suspension of democracy in Pakistan.

Is Bush's tacit approval of Musharraf a sign that he is in favor of an undemocratic coup when it suits his fascist agenda?

We have posted here and on RainbowZine many times that we fear that America may be headed down the road to fascism and that Bush or his cronies might suspend elections or -- as they have done in the past -- commit wide-ranging voter fraud and/or otherwise corrupt the election system to bring about a result that suits the neo-con agenda.

Millions of Americans are distressed about the erosion of privacy and liberty in America but do not know what to do.

We are assaulted on so many fronts that our helplessness, outrage and frustration endangers our very health.

Where do we begin? Do we write to Congress objecting to the proposed new FCC rules that weaken media ownership by big corporations? Do we focus on trying to plead with our representatives in Congress to end the illegal war in Iraq? Demand that they expand health care for the millions of Americans who are uninsured? To act as an equal branch of government and use their power of oversight to maintain checks and balances on Bush's power grab? To demand that the American government does not torture detainees or spy on American citizens?

We are overwhelmed by the multitudes of illegalities that have been piling up since Bush was anointed as President in 2000.

That Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Diane Feinstein will support Judge Mukasey as Attorney General even though he will not condemn torture is simply outrageous!

One option that we will embrace has been offered as an effective way to send a message to those in power who have thus far refused to listen. You are invited and encouraged to participate:
  • What: A General Strike;
  • When: All day tomorrow, November 6, 2007;
  • Where: In your own life, your home and community;
What to do:
  • Do not go to work; and/or
  • Do not ship; and/or
  • Do not use your cell phone; and/or
  • Do not buy gas.
You get the picture. And, if you do decide to participate, please send one email or make one phone call tonight to your elected officials letting them know what you are doing and why.

Tomorrow we will not blog. We will not publish RainbowZine. We will not shop or buy gas. We will strike tomorrow -- we hope with millions of others joining us.

We are participating because, frankly, we do not know what more we can do that we are not already doing!

We hope this strike will send a message before it is too late!
